My Students

As a special education teacher in a low-income inner-city school, I have the opportunity to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of some awesome pre-k thru fifth-grade students. Many of my students come from very difficult situations and work hard so that they can become successful learners. They are motivated to show progress so that they can enroll in excellent middle and high schools upon graduation. Our school has been one of the top performing schools on the MAP test for the past two years.

My Project

My students are working hard to master their addition and subtraction facts. We currently have a few resources to help them practice these skills, but having more would be so much better.

By being able to play a game like Sums in Space or Math for Minecrafters, instead of doing a worksheet, my students will be more engaged and motivated to practice these important math skills that lay the foundation for more advanced math concepts.

Such games will promote not only their math skills, but social skills as well. Many of my students have deficits in these areas and by being able to work cooperatively on a shared task they will be able to increase their peer relationship skills!
