This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are incredible. They are all recent immigrants and refugees from every corner of the world. They come from over 40 countries and speak over 35 languages. They are hardworking, dedicated, supportive, creative and generally wise beyond their years. Most of all, while they have been through so much, their resilience is admirable.
While this is not the senior year anyone imagined for our students, we want to be able welcome them as warmly as possible and celebrate this important year.
These students bring their whole lives to the classroom and have so much to teach each other and their teachers. I am often in awe of my students and am inspired by them every single day. Each day with them is a new adventure, one I feel so fortunate to be a part of.
My Project
This fall will be a challenging one for students and school staff alike. It's one thing to go virtual towards the end of a school year, but it's another to begin that way, before relationships are made and trust is built. Some will be staying home and doing all their learning virtually, while others will be engaged in a blended model, coming to the classroom half the week and learning from home the other half.
I'm hoping these colorful notebooks, folders, pens, highlighters, and bags will help to welcome them back to the school community and remind them that they are loved, even if we are not physically together.
With either model they choose, I want to encourage my English Language Learners to continue to write, not just type. Living in a double pandemic is going to make my already strong students even more powerful, and I hope these supplies provide a space for them to create and process it all.
