Adding Sizzle With a Cajon

My students need a cajon to explore world rhythms and to give our percussion ensembles a fresh, new sound.

My Students

My students are energetic and creative. They love coming to music class twice a week. We're a Title 1 school with many musical opportunities. We have an after school choir, an after school world music drumming ensemble, band and orchestra. Almost every grade level performs in a special concert once a year.

Music gives my students a creative outlet during their day.

They are often in the driver's seat of their class. The students decide where to take a lesson and how to improve their musicianship as individuals or as a class. They have opportunities to try new things in a supportive atmosphere and can refine their musicianship in areas they feel they are strong.

My Project

A cajon would be a wonderful addition to our active, music-making classroom. We would gratefully welcome an exciting new timbre to our music room. It would give my students an opportunity to learn how to play rhythms of the Caribbean and South America and apply those rhythms to our percussion ensembles.

Keeping my students engaged is a priority, and a cajon will pique their curiosity.

It is a simple instrument that will be accessible to all of my students, from kindergarten through fifth grade. The youngest students can practice playing simple rhythms, and my oldest students can practice more complicated patterns. We can use it for rhythmic improvisation because its distinct sound would be heard over the voices of other drums and percussion instruments. We can use it to showcase solo playing and give students a chance to lead our percussion ensembles. I can show my students video examples of music that uses the cajon to spark conversation about and make connections to Caribbean and South American cultures. We will discuss how the cajon is used in current-day musical styles. The cajon can help accompany songs we sing both in the classroom and for public performances. This instrument will be used by students now and for years to come.
