My students need a D pitch contrabass bar to help complete our scale and allow them to play bass lines in more songs in different keys.

My Students
Students enjoy exploring different instrument tones and timbres. In my classroom, they play a variety of instruments and ensemble pieces. They are learning to accompany the music they sing with their instruments. My goal for my classes to create the music on their own without teacher accompaniment.
My students are in grades kindergarten through sixth grade.
Our school is diverse with families from all over the world, with a large percentage of students who speak more than one language. In our music program, we work to provide a strong music education for our students, considering many of them are not able to afford private music lessons. The school is very supportive of the students' music education and welcomes every opportunity for students to perform and share what they learn. The students have a variety of musical interests and passions, to include singing, ukuleles, guitars, drumming, and xylophone/ Orff instrument ensembles. When asking our sixth graders what they would like to explore more of in their final year of elementary music, each of those interests have been mentioned. They show excitement in learning something new, but also express appreciation in continuing something they enjoy.
My Project
We are fortunate to have the amount and variety of instruments that we do, but still have room for more. All students in my classroom have access to play instruments at the same time, especially if they are all playing a mixed variety such as xylophones, maracas, and drums. When playing songs for barred instruments, I have enough for all students to play by having most of them share an instrument with other students. This limits the song repertoire and keys we can play in order for every student to have access to the melody. When students play more complicated arrangements with different parts for instruments, we can add the contra bass bars. They provide support to a song, add richness to the sound, and allow students to hear and play pitches below their vocal register. We currently have the pitches C, F, G, and A in bass bars which allow us to mostly play songs in the key of C major. By adding more pitches to our contra bass scale, we can play more songs in different keys.
By adding to the possible repertoire students can experience and play with the bass bars, it adds to their ability to express themselves through music in giving them more options.
For example, by having the added pitches, they can play the roots of a bass line for more minor keys, which have a different feel that major keys. It also allows more options for the keys they can use when composing music for the instruments we have in the classroom.
