My Students
Our school strives to bring out the best in every student who walks through our doors. In order to do this, we offer classes that meet a variety of interests and do our best to help our students find what they are passionate about so that they find their personal strengths. This is achieved by having faculty and staff who are passionate about kids and what we teach.
I have the privilege of teaching six art classes this year, four Art 1 classes, and two upper-level art classes.
Many of my Art 1 students have never had a formal art class before, and the majority of the materials we use are completely new to them. Included in my 150 students are roughly 40 to 50 English Learners who are almost always exceptionally talented and dedicated and often underprivileged. While many districts around us are struggling with overwhelming COVID cases, our students are so incredibly happy to be back in the classroom that they are diligent about wearing masks, using hand sanitizer, and making sure that they follow all of our COVID protocols. We are all just equally thrilled to be back together as one big family, face to face.
My Project
Since returning to school after nearly a year and a half of virtual learning, my kids are excited to not only return to the classroom to make art; but they're eager to get back into their extracurricular activities including Art Club and National Art Honors Society. Although we can't begin club meetings until mid to late October due to transportation issues, my students are already sharing community service projects that they want to do in the Art club and NAHS with me.
The Sharpies, river rocks, micro paintbrushes, and other requested supplies will help them see those community service projects to fruition.
NAHS wants to paint rocks and hide them at the elementary school next door for the little ones to find and keep; while the Art club wants to create artwork in easels that can be raffled off to raise money for community organizations in need.
