This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul." (Plato)
I have seen how music can draw my students out and entice them to participate. I love when parents tell me how happy they are that their children - my students - are singing our songs at home.
I teach children with special needs in a Kindergarten Special Day Class in a school where 100% of the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
My students' qualifying conditions range from Autism to Mental Retardation to ADHD and Speech/Language Disorders. While they may have learning handicaps, they still have a desire to learn that is inherent in young children, and they just need the right tools to help them be successful.
My Project
Music seems to touch my students on a level that is only rivaled by hands-on activities; because of this, I explore opportunities to provide learning through music. My students learn concepts from letter sounds and days of the week to the life cycle of a butterfly and parts of a flower.
Using an iPod, I can organize my CDs (including CDs of music I have purchased and downloaded from iTunes). I will be able to create playlists for our weekly themes, including topics such as insects and plant life, and activities that encourage movement. The docking station will bring the music to my students' ears to facilitate their learning.
By having an iPod and a speaker system such as the docking station to play it on, at circle time my special needs kindergarten students would be able to listen to and move with or be moved by music to learn concepts that they might not otherwise.
With the help of donors who value education using music and movement, my "glam'd" students will be moved to sing your praises!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
