Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our high school is located in the Albany Park neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. Albany Park is considered the most diverse of all Chicago neighborhoods. Our school is 94% low-income and its graduation rate is 81%. The student body is diverse and includes 73% Hispanic, 13% black, 7% Asian, and 5% white.

Our school is in the 3rd year of having an inclusion program for students identified with mild to moderate disabilities (this is referred to as our CLUSTER program).

We are very proud to have instituted a program called ACE which stands for Acceptance, Caring, Education Program which is a way to integrate our cluster students with other neurotypical students.

In our ACE program, our cluster students join typically developing students in both Art and PE classes. In the ACE art and PE class, there is a general and special education teacher who both teach and oversee the pairing of students. This is our way to create a "best buddy" program that fosters one-to-one relationships and contributes to the social and emotional development of the participating students.

My Project

These adaptive ART and PE supplies will allow our students to fully participate in their classes, with confidence and pride that they are working alongside their general education peers. In gym class, the recumbent bikes and scooters will help students work on gross motor skills, and the soft balls and variety of sports equipment will allow everyone in class to have fun and exercise confidently and safely. In art class, the large brushes and crayons, easy to use scissors, and pencil grips will allow all of our students to create and complete art assignments with equity in mind.

The heart of the ACE program at our high school is fostering the opportunity to build relationships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities , and at the same time to offer social interactions and improve the quality of life and level of inclusion for a population that is often isolated and excluded.

This Donor's Choose campaign will help build our ACE program with equipment needed to help students form meaningful connections with their peers, gain self-confidence and self-esteem, and share interests, experiences and activities.
