My Project
Most people are familiar with the use of IEPs and 504s in American schools. These accommodations can prove equity to students with exceptional physical, mental, or emotional needs.
Have you ever wondered how international students get much needed accommodations?
Sometimes, students who are new to America exist in a "gray area," while their previous education is reviewed, their needs are identified, appropriate medical equipment is sourced, or data is collected about their abilities. This can be a long process!
Teachers at my school notice many unique needs as students await the tools and accommodations that will help them succeed. One of the most common situations we see is the need for corrective lenses. Many students wait months for their new glasses to arrive! The magnifiers in this project aim to help students clearly see papers, computers, and anchor charts until they get their glasses. Teachers also notice a lot of students who are learning to self-regulate. The timer, chair bands, and fidget toys can provide students with options to focus or expend extra energy.
I would love to provide my students with temporary supports, as they adjust to the structure of a school day or navigate the process of getting and IEP or 504. Making learning more comfortable removes another obstacle to their education. Thank you for considering my project!
