My Students
My students are middle school-aged, special education students. They are individuals with a variety of needs. They are low to high functioning students that love being around peers and community members. Some students are nonverbal, but are still able to communicate needs, wants, likes and dislikes. My students are also active members of their school community. My students enjoy going to dances, helping teachers and other students, and participating in extracurricular activities.
Being a well-rounded member of society is very important to these individuals with special needs.
We focus academic skills, but more importantly, we take these skills to the next level of how it is applied to their lives directly. Our classroom is an environment that encourages growth, patience and life skills.
My Project
Students with disabilities deserve the opportunity to experience the great outdoors and the fun of winter sports. In the Western Slope of Colorado, we have amazing adaptive programs housed in various ski resorts around the state. Our school district is fortunate to have an adaptive program close by for our special needs students to participate to their fullest ability. Our students meet compassionate volunteers that provide one-on-one or even two-to-one private lessons for individuals with special needs.
Our students are provided true accomplishments of learning how to ski and snowboard with individuals that understand their physical and cognitive needs for participating in winter sports.
They earn a sense of joy and skill sets that some people never get to experience in their lifetime. The skills they learn are directed towards healthy and active lifestyles, inclusion with others that enjoy the same interest of winter sports and gaining experience of all the beauty Colorado has to offer within our snowcapped mountains.
