Adaptive and Switch Enabled Resources to Play Independently!

My Project

I am a Speech Language Pathologist providing speech and language therapy and communication interventions across both inclusion and self-contained settings. My students are striving to learn to express themselves effectively in the classroom so that they can effectively access the curriculum. These children are extraordinary individuals who choose to overcome challenges and adversity every time they come into the classroom. Through close collaboration with my students' team of classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents, we promote speech and language growth to help our future leaders of tomorrow succeed in both their personal and academic goals.

"Engaging in age-appropriate play with the help of adapted switches allows children to play with the same toys their peers are, creating commonality for forming relationships".

Play is an integral piece of childhood. However, my students' disabilities present barriers which limit their access to play. Through the use of assistive technology such as switches and switch adapted toys, my children can experience independence with environmental interactions. I am requesting switch adapted toys which have been modified so the original switches are rerouted to a larger switch that is easily accessible and easy to operate. Play is such a great motivator to get a child to participate in challenging motor and language activities. The independence a switch adapted toy is just the thing to motivate them to get moving and try. I am not an electrician so re-wiring the toys independently is very difficult for me to do for my students. I am excited that pre-wired switch adapted resources are now becoming more accessible so that we can bring them into the classroom to use with students.
