Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a vibrant bunch of boys who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities.
I have entered a new chapter this year by teaching lower functioning students than I have had in the past 10 years.
In the past, most of my children have been fully functional in the school, and fairly independent. This year I have 3 functionally nonverbal students, and 2 that need full assistance in the bathroom. I greet every student with a hug each morning, and have seen amazing growth in the short time we have been in school. One student tells me each morning how he missed me, which melts my heart...and I have to hold on to that later in the day when he is yelling and swearing at me.
My Project
Though my students are 1st-5th grade, cognitively, many of them are near a 2 year old level. They are unable to access books in the classroom in any sort of meaningful way. Many years ago I attended a Professional Development session for adapting books for students with cognitive disabilities. I was so excited to give my students the gift of interacting with books! They were able to participate in answering questions (difficult for a nonverbal student) by choosing pictures, matching pictures on the pages, telling what they think might happen next, and the list goes on!
All students, no matter their ability level, should be able to interact with books in a way that is meaningful to them.
I want to be able to print books, laminate them for durability, and match pictures to the pages so students can learn matching, numbers, letters, colors, and a host of other skills they need. Students with less developed book handling skills will have books put in binders so it is easier to learn those important handling skills without fear of tearing the book apart. Binding combs, laminating pouches, ink, paper cutters, and a hole punch are all important materials to allow me to assemble and adapt the books for effective student use.
