This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My lively and unique moderate-severe students with disabilities attend school in Southern California which is identified as high poverty and serves 100% free lunch. Our special education budget is very low and limited to what we can purchase for our classroom needs. We have to create various instructional materials that are individualized, adapted, supportive, and reinforcing for our students needs and engagement.

My classroom needs supplies to create accessible adapted materials to help support their reading, learning, engagement, and positive behaviors.

My Project

My students enjoy books and they often pick books over iPads. They turn the pages and often ask for help to read the books aloud to them. I started purchasing and preparing adapted/interactive books for our reading center. The books are at their reading levels and interests. The children enjoy the adapted books because they are accessible, interactive, and easy to manipulate. Some books are adapted to help them access general education topics. They require a lot of preparation and supplies to create the books and visuals supports to go along to help with their reading comprehension.

They enjoy looking at the pictures, reading words at their level, and being able to manipulate pictures on each page of the adapted book.

I want to continue creating adapted/interactive books at their reading levels and interests because they show interest in these books and they have improved their reading habits. The materials, such as laminating sheets and a binding machine, will help me continue to create adapted books that are interactive, fun, and motivating for my students to improve their reading participation. The lamination sheets will help the books be durable for their little busy hands. The velcro also helps with manipulating pictures across the pages and they are able to match pictures to words.

Help give our classroom the supplies needed to produce adapted books, individualized, and visual supports to continue with their joy of reading.
