This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.

My Project

Many of my students are complete non-readers, and some are non-verbal. In order for them to meaningfully participate in morning work, I need to make individualized binders. These binders will have laminated sheets for students to trace days of the week, as well as their names. Binders will include calendar, math, reading, spelling, and fine motor work. Velcro dots and dry erase markers will help students use the same work on a daily basis. Picture cards will help students associate words with activities and can be customized for each student and their interests.

It is my hope that these binders will improve confidence, as well as allow me to individualize each student's binder based on the level they are working at.

It will allow me to cover more skills in a shorter amount of time, maximizing learning time and improving outcomes. As these students have moved through different classrooms, I have seen amazing growth. So many have become almost different students as they have become more confident in their abilities. I want to continue that growth.
