My Students

My students are deaf, hard-of-hearing, and deaf-blind from all over our state. Many have additional disabilities. Our program is a birth-21 bilingual program. Instruction is delivered in American Sign Language and English. The majority of our students receive free or reduced price lunch and take home food backpacks every weekend. We have students of many ethnic and racial backgrounds - African American, Latino, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Hatian, to name a few.

Things our students all have in common are: they are proud members of the Deaf Community who use American Sign Language to communicate; and they all come every day anxious and ready to learn in our school where they have the benefit of direct communication with their teachers and peers.

With COVID and remote school, it is a challenge to keep instruction meaningful and accessible. I am the librarian at our school and I have spent a lot of hours creating props and materials to go along with the different stories I share with our youngest students.

My Project

In teaching our students who are Deaf/Blind and/or who have multiple disabilities, we often must create adapted materials that are more "friendly" and accessible for their needs.

For my Library/STEAM classes, I create adapted versions of the books I share for our exceptional learners.

During COVID remote/hybrid school, I create all of these materials at home and deliver them to my students. The printer I have at home is old, slow, and does not give me the print/scan quality that the machines at school do. Ink runs out quickly, too, and I've used a lot since March.

This new, faster, higher quality printer will make it much easier for me to create these materials in half the time. The filing/storage supplies will help me keep the things I create organized and easier to find when it is time to send new materials to the students.
