Adapted Art for Students With Autism

My Students

Our class is comprised of 8 amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.

Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.

Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.

My Project

Our classroom has a wide range of educational needs and requires a wide range of instructional materials to meet those needs. Our students are each learning on different levels and need different sets of materials for them to meet their individual needs.

Our class needs various art supplies and creative items to fill in gaps and supplement the materials we already have.

In order to meet the needs of our students we are requesting multiple items that will allow them to access and complete art projects related to our classroom themes throughout the year. We are requesting: Squigz to work on fine motor strength in our students' hands so they can better participate in art tasks, dot paint markers to use for students who are not yet able to grip standard paintbrushes so they can still paint, twistable crayons for students to draw with, construction paper for working on cutting skills with, paint and adapted paint brushes to help students better grip their utensils to create their artwork, and glue pens so that students who struggle with squeezing a glue bottle can still participate in pasting items onto their artwork.

Each of the materials requested will be extremely useful in making sure each and every one of our students can participate in art activities and be as creative as they want to be! Your generous donation to our project will improve our kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade self-contained autism classroom and change their lives for the better by helping them have the tools they need to be successful!
