Adaptation Station! Room 208 Needs Materials to Create Adapted Books!

Help me give my students a coil binding machine and developmentally appropriate texts to make adapted stories for read aloud time!

My Students

I am so fortunate to work with a group of students who are unique and special in many different ways. I work with special needs students in kindergarten through second grade. All of my students require full-time special education support in order to help increase their skills in each area of development. Most of my students are nonverbal and have behavior challenges. We are located in a public, inner-city school, in a high-poverty neighborhood, where students receive free breakfast and lunch every day. My goal is to create an engaging environment that meets the unique needs of all of my students! Thank you for taking the time to learn about the amazing students who I work with!

My Project

My students require engaging activities to help keep them interested and motivated to learn. Every week, my students and I read a different book as a class. Our read alouds go along with our monthly themes and helps students to practice language development. In order for our class read aloud time to be developmentally appropriate for students, I adapt all of our books with visuals. Using visuals in the stories helps to increase comprehension of the text and allows students to answer questions about what is being read to them. The visual cards that I add to all of our books create too much space and add pressure to the spines of the books. To help keep literacy lessons exciting and new for students, I am in need of a coil binding machine, so that our read aloud materials do not fall apart. A binding machine will allow me to rebind our read aloud stories, so that there is more space for the added visual cards.

I am also asking for several new books that connect to the different themes that my class studies throughout the year.

Having a variety of stories about the same topic helps keep my students engaged in our thematic units.
