Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.
My Project
I love my classroom. It was a computer lab, so while the rest of the building has no air conditioning, my class is lucky to have it. We have beautiful furniture, counters, and cabinets, a sink, and a SMART Board. While these things are wonderful, the classroom is not always functional for my students. The desks are not adjustable, and the height is often too high for some of my students of shorter stature. However, to get the students as high as possible, we use larger chairs. Cognitively, it is better for students to be able to have their feet flat on the floor (and so their legs don't fall asleep from dangling all day). There is no storage in, on, or around the desks, so they always look messy.
The materials I am requesting will be used to adapt the seating and resources in the classroom to better fit my students.
Booster cushions and step stools will be used to raise up shorter students while allowing their feet to rest on a flat surface. Seat sacks will go on the chairs to help students organize their work and supplies. Velcro dots will be used to make adapted books so my students of all abilities have the opportunity to interact with various reading and center materials.
My students want a chance to learn, and they deserve it. It is my job to provide them with that chance. These materials can help me do that.
