My students come from a low-income/high poverty area and are very diverse, both in race and socio-economic status. 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast. Many have experienced trauma and have some tough home lives, but that doesn't bring them down. They are very eager to learn.
Since our transition to distance learning, it has become clear that my students do not have equal access to learning materials at home.
Depending on specific students' needs and availability of materials at home, some students are learning in paper packets, some are learning online, and some are doing a combination of both. Even with all their struggles, they work very hard and take great pride when they accomplish a tough lesson. They are enthusiastic about learning and excited to explore new learning opportunities every day!
My Project
Our state has closed all school buildings for the remainder of the school year. Though the buildings are closed, there is still a tremendous amount of learning happening. My scholars are working harder than ever!
Because we cannot access the school building, my scholars do not have access to my classroom library.
This means that they have no way to check out books to bring home. Many of my scholars do not have books in their home. They mention during our online class meetings that they wish they had something to read.
When we were in the classroom, my students couldn't get enough of the Questioneers series. These are early chapter books, perfect for third grade readers, and are based on the popular 'Iggy Peck,' 'Ada Twist,' and 'Rosie Revere' picture books by Andrea Beaty. They are engaging, fun, and educational. Each book also reinforces skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. My hope is to be able to provide every scholar in my class with a copy of the book 'Ada Twist and the Perilous Pants.' Not only will they be practicing critical reading and science skills, but they will also be able to start building a home library with books of their own.
