My Project
How would you have liked to spend your time in school? Listening only to lectures and doing worksheets? For students with disabilities it is especially important to make lessons engaging- to help master important lifelong skills and to prevent boredom behaviors. A major focus of our special education class is to work on social skills. We use games not only to help students practice appropriate social skills, we use them in lessons and IEP goal work time. This helps students connect meaningfully to the concepts about which we are learning.
It is necessary to help students master skills so important for independent living.
Learning Help- Each of the board games provides real world opportunities to practice social skills with their peers. These include: how to make friends, taking turns, being good sports, appropriate conversation and much more. The Uno and face cards are especially helpful when working on math and writing goals. Students are able to solve 1 problem each time they take a turn in their game. This helps students associate positive things with learning and helps them practice their skills without getting as frustrated. Counters are an important way to practice 1-1 correspondence and to help them understand foundational concepts of math. Headphones help students listen to audiobooks and math programs without disrupting their classmates. We use expo markers and paper to practice goals.
Fine Motor/ Independence- Paper plates and silverware help us do cooking lessons. We focus on recipes students can do independently which helps them as they grow older. Paint, markers, scissors, and coloring pages help students work on their fine motor skills and gives them an opportunity to connect with their peers in different ways. The floor seats give students- especially those with autism- a way to fidget appropriately during a lesson and stay engaged.
