This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students participate in a high school classroom designed to educate students with severe/profound intellectual disabilities.
My special needs students are from low-income households and receive free lunch, in a school with a limited budget to provide the necessary materials.
The goal of the classroom is to increase academic skills, while also developing functional life skills and increasing life and career readiness. Several of my students are English Language Learners, most come from low-income backgrounds, and several have sensory needs. My students stay with me for several years. Many come to school daily, even if they are ill, as school is a place for them to be with others, receive meals, and be comfortable.
My Project
Activity tables would be of great use in our classroom during this time of COVID-19 and after. These tables would also allow students to work spaced apart, as we are required to do right now. They can also be joined for group activities, when it becomes safe to do so.
Students with significant special needs require the use of multiple materials throughout the school day and these tables would allow them the room for that.
Due to current restrictions, three of my students are required to sit at tables too small for their learning needs.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
