Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My class of 23 diverse, urban kindergarten students live below the poverty line, and are predominately English language learners who have not attended preschool. Most of them will be four years old when they begin kindergarten.

For years, I have felt that the reading center in my classroom is important for students to develop reading fluency and English language acquisition. However, given many of my parent volunteers' limited English skills and the increasing class size, it is difficult for me to make sure that students are focused and following along on the correct page. I often turn around to find the students at the center flipping through pages in an attempt to figure out where the tape or CD is reading.

Recently, I was introduced to the Leap Frog TAG system, which includes beautiful, high interest books to use with an activity pen or read alone. The technology embedded in each pen will allow me to program the books and associated standards based comprehension activities for up to 25 titles. The pen automatically recognizes both the book and the page, eliminating page confusion and boosting student interest.
