Activities for Learning at Home

My Students

My students are all learning at home. It has been very difficult to provide adequate instruction for my students with special needs. We hold daily class zoom meetings and that has become a school routine for my students. Parents participate with the kids and help them stay focused so they can engage in most of the class session. We sing songs, watch GoNoodle videos, read a story a week and answer questions about that story. Everything we do in our class meeting is a familiar routine with my students and it provides a sense of classroom community and connection during this time.

I really want this time at home to be productive, engaging and fun for my students.

I recognize how hard this is for parents and I try to make everything as simple as possible. I've been mailing home packets of work for my students because it is hard for them to do many activities online and parents don't have printers to print materials. The materials I send home are similar to what we do in the classroom. I cut out materials for them to follow visual directions to make art projects and cut and paste activities.

My Project

Throughout the day in the classroom we work on many skills using a variety of different activities. With distance learning students do not have access to many of the hands-on activities we have in the classroom that help them with basic academic and fine motor skills. Learning at home has been very difficult for my students with special needs because they are not able to access many online activities.

Access to hands on learning activities at home will provide my students with opportunities to work reading and math activities while also strengthening fine motor skills.

My students are working on increasing their fine motor skills so that they can also increase writing skills, learn how to write and use their hand to complete everyday life activities such as zipping, buttoning and opening containers. We try to combine as many fine motor skills as we can into academic tasks to provide them with many opportunities to strengthen those hand muscles.

The activities in this project will be given to students as an end of the year gift. Myself, along with other teachers and therapists that work with them will be doing a car parade the last week of school to deliver gifts and to be able to see our students from a distance. They will be home for almost 3 months this summer with probably no opportunity for summer school like we normally have so these activities will help them to continue learning at a time when it is critical to keep working on retaining skills they learned during the school year.
