My Students

I have 126 amazing fourth and fifth grade science students.

They are inquisitive, spontaneous and always wanting to try something new.

Our Illinois school is Title I, with 63% of students coming from low income families, and 16% being English Language Learners. More than half of my students are below grade level in reading. Many students struggle with focusing on assignments and working in the classroom. I am hopeful that with these new resources, students will be able to fidget and move, get their activity in while also learning, focusing and growing in an academic setting.

My Project

I am so excited to be able to share this student inspired idea with the world! I have over 120 students walking through my classroom door a week. These students come from various backgrounds, ability levels and attention spans. For the past few years, I have noticed students becoming more and more fidgety, especially during reading and literacy times. I have given students the opportunity to sit on the floor when working, however most students would prefer to sit in their chair and avoid the floor all together. With these Hokki stools it is the best of both worlds! Students will be able to move around, fidget, and wobble all while having the ability to work at their tables and not be on the floor. Students continually ask me for a better solution to a standard chair, Hokki stools are the answer!

I was also inspired by my students to request the Hokki stools, because our school unfortunately will be required to reduce PE minutes due to scheduling and required minutes for other academic areas.

Reducing PE minutes means my students will not be getting enough movement during the week. These Hokki stools will allow students to get their full sixty minute activity time in, without even leaving the classroom! I know my students love being able to move around, and be active. With these stools they will have the chance to get that necessary movement in.

I have had many students tell me they would be considerably more productive if they had the chance to move while working. These stools are the first step towards brining their vision to life.
