My Students

Fifth grade is what I describe as the perfect year - the students are still "kids" yet they are starting to find themselves as young adults. You can dance around to goofy songs and they join in. Silly jokes still get laughs. The students seem to have a never ending thirst for knowledge about space science, and school is the place where they come to escape the realities of their outside world.

The amazing 5th grade explorers who journey through our classroom door tackle their learning adventures with an open heart and a continually developing growth mindset.

They learn that by working together using their 21st century communication and critical thinking skills, they can tackle any problem that gets handed to them.

Our students come with a range of learning styles and levels. Almost half of our students are English Language Learners, so hands-on or language rich activities support those who are developing language and those who have reclassified. Our students also come from backgrounds in which they often do not have school materials to support their learning at home.

My Project

As students return to in person learning, active bodies will be adjusting to in-person instruction and classroom seating. Our classroom has traditionally had a few options for flexible seating, such as some wiggle seat pads or kick bands, but the supply has been limited.

Prior experience has shown me that students who feel comfortable in their classroom tend to maintain focus a bit more and are more willing to participate in class discussions and activities, items which which will be important as we adjust to in classroom learning this year.

Often times this comfort comes from being a bit active within classroom seats. Some students will bounce their legs up and down or swing their feet while others will wiggle around in their chairs. Some students do best by taking standing breaks while still participating in classroom activities or discussions. With the readjustment back to in-person learning, the need for more options would benefit more my amazing students.
