This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what is was like the first time you learn to use a bicycle? My students have yet to experience this through school.

I teach all subjects in two pre-K classes in a high need Title I with low socio economic school with 36 students.

95% of the students are English language learners and qualify for free lunch. Also, many of the students live in unsafe neighborhoods and in apartments, therefore do not have opportunities to ride tricycles or scooters. School may be the only place where these students will have the opportunity to learn how to pedal a tricycle or use a scooter or balance on a balance beam.

My Project

I have worked at my school for about 14 years, during that time we have not gotten new tricycles or scooters. With CA budget cuts, obtaining new outdoor play materials are not in the budget. Many of the tricycles and scooters we have are broken, rusty, and unsafe. The pedals are broken and some of the seats are becoming detached. One of the major goals in early education is to give students access to activities that help develop their gross motor skills through activities they enjoy. Bike riding is just one of those activities as well as bouncing on a bouncing ball, and balancing on a balance beam. In addition, these activities promotes a healthy and active lifestyle, providing children with beneficial exercises. These outdoor play such as bike riding, balancing, and bouncing on a bouncing ball often serves as an instructional opportunity where they get to build up strength and gross motor skills.

Your donation will allow my students, along with 125 Kindergartner students learn how to pedal a bike, enhance their gross motor skills through outdoor play.

Through these positive outdoor experience, it will promote active lifelong learners.
