Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Title I, level 1 (lowest 25%) Specific Learning Disabled (SLD), Emotionally/Behavioral Disabled (EBD) high school students are in ICU! Yes, they are enrolled in Intensive Reading Plus (+)! More than 90% of the student population qualify for free and/or reduced-price lunch. Approximately 80% of the students live in single family homes.

Our high school has received more than 117 transfer evacuee students from either Puerto Rico or Trinidad that are eager to graduate on time.

However, we have pockets of high schoolers that are not motivated to graduate at all. Our high school was one of the three low performing schools in our district. We have made positive gains academically. Please help our new devastated students accumulate with ease to their new environment. Please help our unmotivated students to use their creativity to motivate and boost their self esteem. They are in need of an innovative project to ease their transition and help them socially and emotionally.

My Project

My students are remedial readers. They spend a large portion of their 90 minutes on the READ 180 computer based learning program. They are extremely sedentary. They will learn and enjoy bowling and tennis by playing on the Play Station 4 gaming system.

It will benefit my students to learn to bowl and play tennis and move around.

Not only will they acquire a new skill, perhaps this experience may motivate these high schoolers to tryout for a team sport at school. Many of my students are antisocial because of their struggles academically. By learning a new skill/game, these deserving teens may adjust and find a peer group to positively socialize and develop into a productive citizen.
