it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“One of the most effective ways to learn about oneself is by taking seriously the cultures of others. It forces you to pay attention to those details of life which differentiate them from you.” ― Edward T. Hall
Imagine being 3 to 5 years old, deaf/hard of hearing, all while being educated in one of the most highly impoverished areas of Houston.
Unfortunately, that is the harsh reality for many of my deaf and hard of hearing pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. All of my students are deaf or hard of hearing, ranging in age from 3 to 6 years old. For many of my students, their first educational experience begins with me, on the first day of school. Many of whom are delayed in oral expression, listening, fine motor, and auditory processing. Our school, located in the 5th Ward of Houston, is that of a tittle one school, which means we are at the highest level of educational poverty. Deaf and hard of hearing students need hands on experiences to bring education to life, and to better facilitate meaningful, hands on learning.
My Project
Since my students are so young, they learn best by having hands on experiences. For my students who are in pre-kindergarten I am asking for a number toss learning set to help better facilitate counting skills as well as gross motor skills. I am also seeking a complete bean bag center, that interactively works on alphabet recognition, shapes, colors and counting! Finally, for the kindergarten students I am asking for sight word steps, and Power Phonic pens to help aid in independent reading, phonics and oral language. The sight words steps would bring learning essential sight words to life, and help aid in out of the box learning techniques! The phonic pens would allow my students to take charge of their independent learning but also provide the ability to self check.
