Active Engagement Using Dry Erase Boards

My Students

I teach 150 wonderful students mathematics in grades 9 and 12 in the city of Philadelphia. We are a large Title 1 school grades K-12 where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. This being said, my students face various challenges at home and in the classroom that interfere with their learning.

However, they work hard to overcome these challenges every single day with a positive attitude and motivation to learn that inspires me every day.

Mathematics isn't always a favorite subject in high school, and I have been working hard to get my students more engaged in the material by incorporating many real-world applications and to have fun with math! It makes my entire day when one of my students has an 'ah-ha' moment after finally mastering a challenging topic.

My Project

Personal dry-erase boards would allow my students to work out problems on the whiteboards instead of on paper. By allowing students to each have their own whiteboard and marker I will be able to tell easily if we have a 100% understanding of a new topic. The way these whiteboards are used in my classroom is to solve equations and hold up a solution so I can easily check to see if the students are engaged and understanding and in a class of 30 this is a very convenient way to reach all of my students.

Using dry erase boards and dry erase pockets will help to save so much paper in our classroom and help to better engage learning in a fun fast-paced way!

The dry erase pockets will allow my students to put a piece of paper in the pocket and use dry erase on it. That way with 5 classes, I only have to make one class set of the worksheet and not have to waste paper. A lot of the activities I use in my classroom would be great for the dry erase pockets.

These materials will greatly benefit my students and the environment.
