My Students

My school is a rural school in the Western Piedmont region of North Carolina, approximately 45 minutes from Charlotte. Our school is a Title 1 school, where 69% of our students receive free and reduced fare hot lunch. On weekends and holidays, some of our most needy students are sent home with backpacks full of food. We have a diverse population of students, with many student who are Hmong and Hispanic. Our students are simply good kids who want to learn. My students are extra special, as they have different disabilities, including seizure disorders, brain injuries, Down Syndrome, and a myriad of other things that effect their learning abilities, but NOT their desire to learn. My goal is to give them quality instruction to meet their individual needs in an environment that is fun and exciting and allows for physical movement, opposed to traditional seating at a desk.

My Project

This will be my first year teaching a group of students who are in a self-contained classroom. To make learning more fun, I would like to have a very open classroom in which traditional seating is not a necessity. I plan to use many rotations in my instruction, so these different seating options will allow for movement around the classroom for each station rotation. As scientific research shows, student who have the opportunity to move their bodies while learning have higher achievement. I want my classroom to be inviting, fun, and have a “home away from home” feel. After all, these kids spend the majority of their day here with me.
