My students need scientific calculators to solve math problems in five domains and to emerge themselves in exploring solutions to real-world scenarios.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of the students attending my class demonstrate desire for learning and have been working very hard to reach higher levels in their academics. They like to explore, create, compete and are eager to use tools that help them become proficient.
My students are a group of energetic teenage-mathematicians who are ready to explore, discover, and create.
At this stage, having the right resources is critical for them so they can acquire the necessary skills to be competitive with the demands of the 21st century. Their goal is to take with them a good foundation in math and science to meet the challenges in High School.
My Project
Students in the late few years have been going through a transition mandated by the Common Core State Standards. Students are transferring their traditional arithmetic skills to the new way math is being presented to them.
My students will need scientific calculators to solve basic to complex math problems that include exponents and scientific notations, squared and cubic roots, and solving geometrical problems on three-dimensional figures involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres.
Tools like computers, tablets, and calculators have helped students emerge their abilities into a new higher thinking level and a much better attitude towards learning math. Existing classroom's scientific calculators are shared in a ratio of 1 to 10 minimizing the student's opportunity to achieve dexterity. Therefore the scientific calculators become a necessary tool to help students reach proficiency in skills beyond the basics.
