Actions & Interactions: Guiding Social Behavior in Special Education

My Project
My students are amazing, creative, and full of potential—but many of them struggle with social communication, emotional regulation, and behavior in ways that make everyday school interactions challenging. I teach in a special education classroom for teens, and I want to create a space that not only teaches essential social skills but also helps students feel safe, calm, and engaged while they learn.
To support them, I’m asking for social skills curriculum books, soft lighting lamps, wobble chairs, social games, and a 3D printer.
The social skills curriculum books will provide structured lessons, visual supports, and practical strategies to help my students learn how to communicate with peers, manage big feelings, and develop lifelong interpersonal skills.
Lamps and low lighting will help reduce sensory overload from fluorescent classroom lights. Many of my students are highly sensitive to their environment, and creating a calmer, softer space will help them stay focused and feel emotionally safe.
Wobble chairs are a game-changer for students with ADHD, autism, and sensory needs. They allow movement while seated, helping students stay regulated and participate fully in lessons and discussions.
Social skills games will bring learning to life by turning important concepts like empathy, turn-taking, and cooperation into fun, hands-on activities.
Finally, a 3D printer will let students design and print their own fidgets—tools that help with focus and self-regulation. Even more exciting, students will also learn computer skills, 3D design, and problem-solving as they create their own projects.
