My Students
My 11th and 12th graders work long hours after school and participate in extracurricular activities, and that leaves little time for entertainment or activities that foster their imaginations. This book will offer them the chance to learn and enjoy reading at the same time.
I teach 148 11th and 12th grade students in a high poverty area.
Our school is situated in a small, rural community, and is designated as 100% free and reduced lunch. My students are incredibly kind, hard working, motivated, and supportive of one another. However, the books and technology they use at school are often the only exposure they receive to such materials. My students deserve access to unique and imaginative materials and the experience of reading truly classic books that offer them a peek at life in the world beyond our community.
My Project
I would like to provide my class with 30 copies of "Monster" by Walter Dean Meyers. This is a novel written as a screenplay, which will offer them an exceptional example of how to write their own adaptations. Thematically, the story is also a wonderful opportunity to discuss with teens how every decision can alter your future.
From amazon.com:
"This New York Times bestselling novel and National Book Award nominee from acclaimed author Walter Dean Myers tells the story of Steve Harmon, a teenage boy in juvenile detention and on trial. Presented as a screenplay of Steve's own imagination, and peppered with journal entries, the book shows how one single decision can change our whole lives."
My students will build fluency and confidence as they read the screenplay/novel aloud together, and will be exposed to a type of literature very different from novels they have read before.
Additionally, I hope to inspire them by offering such an intriguing, unique text, they will learn that reading is a form of entertainment that can feed their creativity.
