This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an art teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district where students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I want things to remain simple in my classroom and I want to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My high school students are very creative in the arts (art and music).

They love to get a chance to express themselves. We are in need of art materials so they can be successful and as creative as possible in class and after school art club. Students love to receive positive attention and praise from their mentors and peers . From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom my goal is to focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I highlight their strengths and try to make every student feel important. I may not be able to control their home lives, but I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire our students to put their best self forward.

My Project

Students will create "Act of Kindness" Cards for students and staff in our school. We will use a printmaking technique (such as mono-printing), as well as other media such as watercolor. I have restored an old print press and this will give students and opportunity to experiment and learn how to use it. They will be adding quotes that are positive and brighten up someone's day. High school can be a rough and tough place and our school is no different. Our students and staff face challenges each and everyday. A kind, positive statement can go a long way! We are striving to be a strong, positive school community and this is a great way to encourage kind words.
