This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What comes to mind when I tell you that I am a public school teacher in the poorest congressional district in the United States of America? I can assure you that it is nothing other than beautiful, multi-cultural classrooms that are bustling with bilingual students learning how to read, write and express themselves in a new language.
As English Language Learners my students have very diverse language needs that are met through high-quality, differentiated instruction.
They come to school every day ready to learn and it is my job to provide them with the necessary materials, support and scaffolds to succeed.
My Project
When children listen to audiobooks they hear firsthand the proper pacing and intonations of reading, how punctuation should sound, and how reading should sound. Audiobooks can provide a wealth of support and opportunity for students, especially English Language Learners who would otherwise not have access to such rich, diverse language.
During Reader's Workshop and Reading Intervention students who are still developing the literacy skills needed to read independently will be able to listen and read along to these high-interest audio books at their desks without disturbing others.
Such audio books include leveled fiction and non-fiction leveled readers in addition to literary classics like Curduroy and Brown Bear, Brown Bear. Thanks to your generosity the cd players, headphones and audiobooks will allow students to hear fluent reading, rich vocabulary and interesting plot lines. One day these same students will be able to transfer the knowledge they've gained from listening to audiobooks to their own independent reading. At this point of development the audiobook support can be removed and shared with another student on their path to becoming an independent reader.
