My Students
There is nothing more frustrating to an English teacher than hearing "I hate reading!" from a student. Therefore I try hard to find books, poetry and plays that my students will relate to and maybe even enjoy. I love seeing when a student can't put down a book that we are reading in class!
My classroom of 7th graders is truly a melting pot.
They encompass a variety of races, socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities. My classes also include the honors English class for the 7th grade.
This year our school is teaching via the Common Core Standards that have been adopted statewide. As a result we are making some changes from how we have taught in the past and need to incorporate reading materials at an even higher level of rigor. The need for rigor is even greater for the Honors class which I hope to operate similar to a high school level classroom.
My Project
I am asking for class sets and resources for two different books. The first is "Farewell to Manzanar," which details the experience of a young Japanese girl in an internment camp during World War II. My students will use this book to study narrative writing and create their own personal narratives. They will also be able to connect it to their study of Hawaiian history and World War II. The second book is a set of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" to be read by the honors class. I hope to expose them to the wonderful work of Shakespeare in order to prepare them to be successful in high school.
I hope you will consider donating to my classroom so that my students can enjoy both "Farewell to Manzanar" and "The Tempest".
I hope to help convince my students that reading can be enjoyable while challenging them along the way!
