My Students

This school year, I have the privilege of educating 28 wonderful first graders. We are at a school located in the Washington Park area, on the South side of Chicago. My classroom is composed of 100% African American students; the majority of whom come from low income homes. It is unfortunate that many are faced with life challenges at such a young age but their academic life should not be one of them. I believe that all children should be given equity in education. It is a challenge to provide these equal opportunities when unfortunately every school is not funded equally. I am motivated to bring enriching experiences to my little ones especially when every morning I am greeted by their smiles and their eagerness for knowledge they display.

Every morning I walk into the building, my little scholars cannot wait to get into the classroom to learn.

It seems as if their minds thirst for knowledge. My scholars motivate me to give them as much knowledge as their minds can handle each and every day. My scholars love school and I want this love and appreciation for knowledge to go with them way into their college years.

My Project

The project I have created is one that I know motivates my young, beginner readers to read. I am requesting 4 child sized arm chairs for my library area of the classroom.

What a teacher does best is find what drives his or her students and incorporates that into their learning to motivate them to want to learn.

I had similar arm chairs in my previous first grade classroom and they loved it! They could not stay away from the library and could not wait until it was their turn for library time. My scholars loved to grab their books and read when they sat in the chairs. Also, since the chairs are child sized it gave them a sense of individuality as a child. They made the library area more welcoming and appealing to their age group. Our library was a place where you can go to sit comfortably and read in a quiet space. On certain days I allowed book shares in the library. This is a period in the day where if you had a library period that you are able to share out your book with other scholars who had a library period. That is why I would like our library to have 4 arm chairs.

Sometimes, when a scholar was feeling over whelmed and needed a calming area, they would ask to sit in the library. The arm chairs and peacefulness gave them a calming feeling where then they were able to rejoin the class.
