Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a class of 8 children with autism spectrum disorder who have learning disabilities and medical conditions. However, despite all their problems, they put their maximum effort and are willing to work hard in order to fulfill their special dreams.

Most of my students come from low-income families, where even though parents try their best to raise their children, education becomes difficult due to low resources.

Plus nowadays, all technology equipment constantly changes, and it can be hard to stay up to date without breaking the budget.

My Project

Technology is an excellent tool to use with all students; but for children with autism, computers might be considered as a therapeutic tool and also as an educational resource. Autism is characterized by impairment in communication and social-emotional interaction and expression, and computers may not be a “miracle cure” for autism; however, the effectiveness of its use in class make it critically important to consider it when teaching them. Computers offer positive impacts for reducing the students’ stress, making it easier to overcome their challenges. Technology can be an essential element to overcome their difficult challenges like over-stimulation and frustration, which are very common among these children.

Implementing the use of a new technology tool (tablet), I think will be "One Step at a Time" to assist these children to overcome their complex challenges and to fulfill their special dreams.

I consider technology as a unit of intervention to meet individual needs. Children with autism seem to be specialists when using technology. It is easy-to-use for them, so learning becomes more motivated and interactive, promoting students’ independence, consistent engagement, and decreases the waste of time of the learning process.

Additionally, to have access to a computer-assisted learning program is becoming more important among these students than ever. Computers help them to build essential fine motor, cognitive and language skills development through interaction with different materials in multiple ways like playing games, figuring out puzzles, and solving problems.

Children with autism might not remember what you taught them yesterday due to their lack of attention; however, they will remember what they play with, discover, or experienced at their own interesting and motivation.
