This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a diverse group of amazing fourth graders full of life, energy, and curiosity! They love digging into learning with their minds, hearts, and hands. They come from a variety of backgrounds and face many challenges, including poverty, abuse, mental and emotional health issues, and family discord.
Many of them thrive off the stability and structure that the classroom provides.
It is in the classroom that they learn about themselves and the world. They learn how to face challenges, fail without giving up, interact with others, build relationships, and impact their world.
Students feel most comfortable and learn better in a clean and safe environment.
My Project
I have students with various physical needs. Some have circumstances that prevent them from being able to safely and comfortably sit with the remainder of the class on the carpet. The alternative seating currently provided is conspicuous and attracts attention and comments from other students as well as other adults who visit the classroom. This leads to feelings of embarrassment, loneliness, and low self-worth. This couch would provide adequate, attractive, safe, and comfortable seating for those individuals. They would feel privileged, even special to be able to use this seating arrangement. This would help to care for the emotional needs of these students and free their minds and hearts for learning. No more dread of the classroom meeting area, just joy! This item would make an immediate and significant impact on my classroom!
