This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students attend a charter school just outside of Detroit, MI. Students and their families choose to attend the school as an alternative to their neighborhood school. Over 80% of the school lives at or below the poverty level, making many aspects of their lives complicated. Many students come from difficult and very economically depressed neighborhoods. Additionally, students have little opportunity to access diverse information and experiences beyond their own neighborhood, making it difficult for them to imagine the possibilities available to them.

My specific group of students are served under special education programs, putting them at an even greater disadvantage than their already underprivileged classmates.

These students require a lot of patience, dedication and caring to continue to make academic progress. Each of the students with whom I work is very unique and wonderful in his or her own way. Each one has a different perspective on the world and most just want to feel success on any level as this can be difficult for any child living in poverty to come by.

My Project

I am asking for five Lenovo Chromebooks with Google Chrome OS Management Consoles. Through the use of these Chromebooks, not only will my students benefit from access to accommodations like text-to speech and keyboarding software, they will have access to high-quality educational software available in my school. Currently there are simply not enough computers and laptops to go around, yet the availability of free programs and apps available to students is very high, both through the district and broader educational outlets.

For my students with special needs, access to technology is one of the greatest tools to level the playing field and give them a chance to make great academic strides.

Allowing students the opportunity to experience learning through technology programs gives them a feeling of self-reliance and independence as they can often pace themselves and are more accountable to the work they are doing. Additionally, computer-based learning and activities can be tailored to a student's immediate needs so that resources are available with a click rather than a day of searching for just the right resources, making copies, and finding that only a portion of the resources are truly helpful. Computer-based work allows for much more efficient matching of skills deficits with learning opportunities my students desperately need to close educational gaps and prepare for jobs and life beyond high school.
