Accessing Geometry: Getting Our Hands On Math

My students need 18 resources, including dominoes, origami, math logic games, 3d shapes, markers, a carrying case for our calculators, educational posters, flash cards, books about proofs and a bucket of dice.

As a mathematics teacher in an inner city school, I have the joy and challenge of teaching a subject that many students find to be frustrating and difficult. I teach students Geometry, Algebra and Statistics. As a result, I work with students from a range of backgrounds and interests, who genuinely reflect the diversity of the city.

Our students need more hands-on tools to better understand Geometry. Many of them are visual and tactile learners and we do not have the materials to access math in those manners. My students also do not understand how math is in our lives every day. We need a variety of resources that will help us realize that the math we are learning now will be used for the rest of our lives.

This project will help bring a lot of useful tools in to our classroom. Posters will brighten up our walls. Dice and logic games will give students a chance to use their reasoning skills in a low-stress environment. Origami and 3d models of shapes will help students put their hands on volume and surface area. And finally, books about the financial side of real-life will show students how we can apply math to balancing our checkbooks and investing. All of these tools will bring more diversity to the type of activities we can do in class and allow me to differentiate the skills for the students.
