This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What are your memories of learning algebra? Did you have opportunities to gain an understanding of complex and abstract mathematical concepts with tangible and concrete experiences? I believe that algebraic understanding is essential for my students and I want to help them experience algebra.
I teach at a high-achieving urban, K-8 charter school where almost all of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch and are classified as English Language Learners.
Our students come to school determined to gain the skills that they need to become college ready and college bound. In particular, my students are eager to learn about mathematics and engage in challenging activities to further their understanding.
My Project
I teach sixth grade math, though I want to give my students opportunities to develop powerful understandings of mathematics from an early age. I would like to have access to math tools in the classroom, because they offer a concrete visual for students to comprehend complex algebraic concepts. We can use them to model integer operations, factoring, area, perimeter, equations, and so much more. My students always enjoy having tools to work with to demonstrate their thinking and interact with what they are learning, so I know that these tools could help them to delve deeper into important foundational skills for future coursework. These are especially powerful tools for my students who are English Language Learners (almost all of my students) and my students with special needs, who often need accommodations involving math tools to represent abstract concepts in a concrete way.
I hope that you will consider helping us to give students tools to show their thinking and understanding of developing algebraic concepts.
This is a powerful investment in building important foundational knowledge for students to access higher level of math. I am so excited to bring these amazing tools into the classroom! Thank you for your support!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
