Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the pleasure of working with students in the Gifted, Arts, and Technology magnet in Los Angeles area of Silver Lake and Los Feliz.

My students are highly-engaged; they are risk-takers who enjoy exploring new perspectives to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and society.

They engage in innovative learning experiences, developing their intellect, creativity, curiosity, and compassion in order to contribute meaningfully to their own lives, their community, and the world.

My students are culturally and ethnically diverse learners from different socioeconomic backgrounds. We are a Title I school located in an urban setting.

My Project

I am requesting a subscription to Study.com to support the needs of my students as we continue with distance learning. I teach 6th-grade English, history, social studies, and an art elective. I also have two advisory classes to help address the social and emotional learning of my students. I envision using these Study.com videos and lessons across various subjects to keep my students engaged and active while learning remotely. Study.com's bite-sized, animated videos and lessons help break down complicated concepts. These videos and lessons can serve to front-load the information we will cover in a unit and also serve as an end-of-a-unit review prior to an assessment. In English, for instance, the students will partake in expository writing where they will expose the reader to the life of a person they have chosen to read about. They will write an expository essay discussing the aspect of that individual's life that parallels Joseph Campbell's Monomyth. Study.com's videos and lessons will help assess a student's understanding of expository writing as well as Campbell's archetype.

This project will help me further support students who are struggling by providing them with supplemental material and lessons to make the content accessible; additionally, it serves as a platform for enrichment for students to further their understanding of a topic.
