This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
For the past 27 years, I have dedicated my career to serving as a Special Education teacher within the Los Angeles Unified School District. I maintain lasting connections with my students and their family members, long after graduation, and have learned that former students who were eager to gain competitive employment were not employed. In fact, people with intellectual disabilities are significantly underrepresented in the workforce. These capable individuals often remain unemployed because of society's perceptions of their abilities. I was determined to find a pathway that would meet this need. I found the answer in the Project SEARCH program.
Since 2018, I have had the privilege of being the LAUSD Project(PS) SEARCH Instructor at Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills.
This transformative program offers students in their last year in public education the opportunity to immerse themselves in a year long work internship, and then secure competitive employment after graduation. The PS program gives our interns the chance to break through societal barriers and demonstrate their ability to perform complex, high-level tasks in Kaiser's hospital departments such as the Laboratory, Pathology, Urgent Care, Food and Nutrition, and Environmental Services.
Through my years as a PS Instructor I have discovered that technology based instructional learning methods are the most effective for my students. However, my ability to create high -quality instructional materials are limited by my district-issued laptop. This device does not offer the creative freedom or advanced capabilities I need to produce the highest quality materials. With your generous support, I hope to purchase a MacBook. This powerful tool will enable me to create dynamic and interactive learning resources, leading to the assimilation of essential skills for my students' future careers
