Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“We know that equality of individual ability has never existed and never will, but we do insist that equality of opportunity still must be sought.” -Franklin D. Roosevelt

My students are young adults with mild/moderate disabilities.

They are part of an adult transition program that focuses on four domains of life: social-emotional, vocational, independent living skills, and recreation/leisure. Students spend time in the classroom learning practical skills such as: cooking, using public transportation, banking skills, personal hygiene, vocational training, interpersonal communication skills, accessing community resources, developing healthy relationships, and self determination skills. They apply skills learned in the classroom during community based lessons. Students are given the opportunity to go to work sites with job coaches and learn necessary skills to gain meaningful employment. The program provides students opportunities to be more independent and have the experiences of any typical young adult.

My Project

My students will be able to perform various essential tasks with the help of an HP Touch-Screen laptop computer. They will be taught how to use and access maps to route out their destinations to and from work sites. They will be able to use the Internet to access websites designed for adults with disabilities and learn about invaluable resources. Students will be able to use programs that will help them generate resumes. Students will use the Internet to locate recreation and leisure activities that are fun and budget friendly. They will be able to access their bank accounts and practice money management. The laptop will be used for a variety of activities.

Statistics show that people with disabilities have a higher rate of living in poverty and unemployment.

The key to reversing this trend is by helping these young adults learn how to become more independent, gain meaningful employment, and utilize resources. Students will use this laptop to gain knowledge and skills that will help them improve their post-secondary outcomes.
