Accelerating Math Class

High School Freshmen in a High-Need Area are Aiming High with Accelerated Math in an Inclusion Classroom

The students in my inner city classroom have many difficulties to overcome just to make it to school every day. It is my goal to make my classroom a place where needs are met readily; however the lack of funding in our district has put this in jeopardy.

We have been working this school year with a computer-based math program that allows me to individualize the work so that students are working at the level they need. Due to the lack of funding for things like computers, I must print all of my students' work. We are running low on paper and ink to keep the program running, and again the district is unable to provide.

My students love this program and have begun to compete with each other about the number of objectives they master. Students who initially hated math are now running to me to show me their perfect scores ... yes, in a high school math class, students are running to the teacher to show their scores! With your help and generosity I can keep this great learning environment going and create a class of to-be sophomores out of a group that many told me would be drop-outs.
