Accelerated Readers-They Shot for the Stars and Reached Them
My students need a rented train.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. David's classroom raised $271

I teach 4th grade at a Title I school that is located in Louisiana. I have wonderful students in my class who love to learn. My school is very dynamic and all of our 4th grade teachers work together to make one-on-one and tactile learning possible for our students.
Despite some personal hardships, the parents of my students are cooperative, supportive and desire that their children receive the best education possible. Many have basic necessity needs, as our community was drastically impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and my school opened its arms to the students and their parents.
My class loves to read and I challenged them to read Accelerated Reader (AR) books and take a computerized test on each book. Each child has an account and I can track their AR points weekly. Each book they read counts between .5 and 3 points. I issued my challenge in September and by December, my class had over 500 points! More than any other class and more than some grade levels all together! I then challenged them to reach 1000 points and told them I would rent a train large enough for them all to ride on the field behind our school. This train has tires and can go on road or field. The students negotiated with me for a picnic - with me cooking them spaghetti and meatballs, cookies, and chocolate pecan fudge. I excitedly agreed because 1000 AR points are unimaginable for one class to attain, this was the least I could do for their effort. They are doing it - they already have 974.4 points and today is March 10th!!! I am breaking out my baking equipment and have booked the train but could use help paying for it. It is normally $350 but the company discounted the cost when I explained to them why I need it. They also upgraded us to the DELUXE train which is large enough for the whole class to ride together! I am planning a whole afternoon of celebration with the train, picnic, games, and music. I have enlisted our administrator and parents to help me serve the food and judge the games. My children are so excited!!! PLEASE help me make this a day they will never forget! I am also buying trophies for the top readers.
These children love school and they love learning, it makes teaching them a privilege instead of a job. I buy all of our Kleenex, paper towels, writing journals, and folders. I also buy baby wipes for the children to wipe their faces after P.E. and recess to refresh them.
My students have dreams of college and understand that an education is their way to success. I have tried to build relationships with my parents so they know that I will mentor the children throughout their lives, not just in 4th grade. I love my students and it is important to me that they succeed not only in 4th grade, but in life.
In the last 3 years I have spent over $3000 of my own money buying uniforms, shoes, eyeglasses, and other things that my students need. I try to care for each child as I would my own children. This grant would go far in helping the children learn. I will gladly do whatever is necessary to comply with any and all terms associated with this grant and I thank you sincerely for your kind consideration of my request.
