Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This will be our fourth school year for Academic Decathlon and our third year of Academic Pentathlon. Every year the students have a new curriculum to study and this upcoming year's theme will be The Roaring Twenties. Each year we eagerly await May 15th as the new curriculum will be released and I then take over the copy room and make folders for each one of the students to start studying and preparing for the new competition that year.

Then during the summer I prepare materials for the students for the new school year making hundreds of practice tests that I share with the other teachers across LAUSD who also teach decathlon and pentathlon.

It is a group effort to make everyone's team as successful as possible.

When the school year begins the students are given a little pouch of school supplies including highlighters, erasers, pencils, flags for their binders and study cards that I have created about their topics. The students love having a little bag full of school supplies as extra organization and motivation help for the year.

Even though we are a new team, we have already have had great success. In just our 1st year of Decathlon we won Most Improved School, and had two students win a total of 11 medals. In our 2nd year we won 3rd place in our division and five students won a total of 11 medals. In just our 3rd year (this year!) we won 2nd place in our division and eight students won a total of 33 medals (including four students placing top 3 in their division). Our pentathlon in just their first year won first place in the Super Quiz competition and two students won a total of six medals.

We are building toward sustaining a successful program.
