My Students

My school is comprised of a variety of students. Some of these students are described as limited English students, delinquent, migratory students, or students with disabilities. The total enrollment is approximately 776 students. The ethnic composition is comprised of approximately 62% Black, 11% White, 20% Hispanic, .2% American Indian, 3% Asian, and 3% two or more races. In my school, 64.5% of the students are eligible for free or reduced meals.

Students at my school love to learn, and can acquire so much more knowledge if only we had the resources.

My goal for my students is making sure they are learning in an environment that is challenging, innovative, and engaging. Acquiring the educational materials needed to achieve my goal will set a path for students' success beyond the classroom.

My Project

Art is not an extra subject, it is integral to the curriculum! When we were children, everything meant playing and art. The world was a playground and a canvas. Combining science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) rather than teaching the content areas as separate entities, not only motivate students, but engage students in problem solving and finding solutions. Art and science are intrinsically linked.

STEAM is all about inspiring our next generation of inventors, innovators and leaders to question like a scientist, design like a technologist, build like an engineer, create like an artist, and deduce like a mathematician (STEAM Kids, 2016).

As part of their study on electricity and circuits, students in my K-5 STEAM lab will use their engineering skills to build a robot equipped with a motor, a series circuit, and markers that will allow the robot to create abstract artwork unique to their particular robot.

When students can make connections between disciplines, they will begin to make sense of their world. Empowering future generations through STEAM will grow a dynamic innovative economy. According to the U.S. Department of Education (2015), it is more important than ever for our youth to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information.
