My Students
Do you remember how excited you were when you learned to count? Walking around the house counting everything in sight is what I can remember from my kindergarten experience.
The majority of my students have not had the opportunity to experience working with numbers at home.
Michigan is facing a severe economic hardship which is causing parents to spend less and less time with their students. The lack of exposure to counting and numbers has had a huge negative effect on students' early numeracy skills. Coming from such a low income area, with a lack of home training has proved a need for hands on materials to increase their understanding of numbers and counting.
My Project
Allowing them to work with and explore numbers using manipulatives will allow them to not only be able to count, but to gain a deeper understanding of numbers. My students will be able to take numbers from abstract to concrete while using the abacus and whiteboards.
This is very important to my class.
Learning and understanding numbers at an early age is important for the success of my students in their future. The hands-on approach to learning that the abaci provide will allow my students an important understanding of numeracy.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
