My Students

I believe the purpose of education should be to prepare students for the 21st century jobs they will be competing for within the next decade of their lives. This task becomes difficult when students are using antiquated laptops to try to engage in online lab modules, research, and data entry!

Located in the Four Corners region of New Mexico, our school is on the border of the Navajo Nation and the Zuni Pueblo.

As a result, there is a great diversity in our students, who come from all types of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Our school falls under Title I, meaning that the majority of students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Much of the school's budget is consequently channeled towards student support services, leaving minimum funding for enrichment and gifted services.

My Project

Imagine a classroom where you walk in and see students interacting with technology, conducting inquiries into photosynthesis or genetic replication using touch-responding computers. I believe that these computers will not only engage and interest students, they will also deepen student understanding of abstract concepts such as genetics and chemical reactions at the atomic level. When students see how science works in an interactive setting, they will naturally become more curious and interested in pursuing careers in STEM (science/technology/engineering/math) fields in the future.

I work very hard to provide students with the same opportunities that their peers in more affluent districts have.

There is great inequity in educational opportunity at the moment. I do not want the brightest students in this region to underachieve or not find a passion because they didn't know what is out there. To this extent, I appreciate your continued support for my classroom!
